“GRAYSON COLTON MACKENZIE!” Paige squealed, desperately trying to stop her best friend from throwing her into the ocean.
She was fully clothed and squirming in his arms, but her attempts to escape were futile. Gray was tall, broad, and solid, and he held her tight as he ran across the sand toward the water.
“What?” he teased, completely unfazed. “I took your phone from you on the deck, and you aren’t wearing a watch. I don’t see the problem.”
“Gray! I’m fully clothed.” She punctuated her next words, squirming harder. “Put. Me. Down.”
It was useless. Realizing she wasn’t getting away, Paige wrapped her arms around his neck with all her strength. If she was going in, he was coming with her.
Gray hit the surf without slowing. He’d intended to go in with her all along, or so she thought. The moment her grip loosened, he tossed her forward, and she tumbled into the salty water.
She had just enough time to take a breath before she sank beneath the waves. She surfaced; red hair plastered to her head and clothes clinging to her lithe frame. Gray stood just out of reach, water only up to his waist, laugh lines crinkling as he doubled over.
Only then did she notice he was already wearing swim trunks.
“Oh, you are dead,” Paige declared, splashing toward him.
The Music Behind the Story
Anyone that knows me knows that music is simply one of the most important things in my life. This book is no different.
This story has lived in my head and heart for well over a decade. It just never had an outlet, until one song finally hit me just the right way.
I have listened to the song Without You by Jason Manns easily 100 times before I truly stopped moving and listened to the lyrics. In that moment I realized “This is my story. This is Paige and Gray.”
I sat down at my computer and started typing. Now, months later, I have a completed manuscript that is ready for editing. Jason has graciously given me permission to use his lyrics in this book - as if Gray wrote them for Paige.
The story hasn’t stopped there. I already have my next 2 books underway - one of which is the first in a 5 book saga. Click over to my Dark Mafia page to see info on that one!
It’s been a whirlwind, but it has proved to me that dreams don’t have to disappear. Sometimes they just need to hibernate for a while.
